Educational Programme for Trainees

lab.Bode is an educational programme for trainees in cooperation with the Bundesakademie für Kulturelle Bildung Wolfenbüttel.

With its educational programme for trainees, lab.Bode creates a space for articulating and reflecting upon current discourses and issues surrounding contemporary education and outreach at art museums. Seven three-day modules provide an opportunity for trainees to engage with practical and theoretical fundamentals of museum education and offer them help in the contextualization, assessment, and documentation of their own art education and outreach projects. Every module is linked with the actual practice of lab.Bode and includes time for the trainees to consult with colleagues in the field.

Module 1_Attitudes and Positioning

Why do we need education and outreach? What role do I want to play as an educator? What language do I speak? How does theory influence my practice? What is my concept of the museum? The first module is dedicated to participants’ individual and professional standpoints within art education and their engagement within an institutional setting.

Module 2_Educational Concepts and Forms of Outreach

The second model focuses on educational theories and approaches to learning that are relevant to educational work in museums. Concepts of knowledge, learning, and education are addressed from (art) pedagogical and artistic perspectives.

Module 3_Museum and Schools

With a look at existing partnerships and collaborations, the third module is dedicated to forms of collaboration between schools and museums. Are there certain conditions that foster successful collaborations? Where do these two institutions come together and where is it important to draw a dividing line?

Module 4_Concept Phase and Project Management

A key aspect of museum education is the conceptualisation and realisation of projects. What does it take to create a good concept? How does one best write a concept and carry it out? Through the use of concrete examples, this module develops strategies for creating and managing projects.

Module 5_Space and Visibility

By looking at actual spaces for education, the module explores the role of education and outreach in individual institutions. Participants together take stock of the self-understanding and educational practice within the institution of the museum as seen from different perspectives, from the standpoint of curators, educators, and designers.

Module 6_Documentation and Reflection

The working basis for this module includes the assessment methods provided to trainees for their period of observation at lab.Bode. In this module, time and space are dedicated to topics such as the documentation of one’s own work, research on impact and visitors in cultural education, and the demands placed on one’s own concept and practice of outreach.

Module 7_Final Colloquium

The final colloquium summarises the joint and individual paths taken over the course of the program, develops perspectives for the future, and addresses open questions. The trainees choose their own forms of presenting their individual summary of the programme.
